Technology has played an important role in human history, beginning with the use of simple tools. The prehistoric discovery of fire expanded food sources, while the wheel improved travel within the environment. Later inventions, including the printing press and telephone, reduced physical barriers to communication. But not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes, and throughout history we have seen the development of weapons with increasing destructive powers.
Design science
Design science in technology involves the study and implementation of a new technological solution or artefact. This research relies on rigorous methods of construction and evaluation to create a useful artifact. This method is a new research method suggested by Herbert Simon. This approach aims to provide innovative and useful solutions to business challenges.
In practice, design research often draws on methods and theories from neighboring fields. It often takes place in different settings and does not have a coherent explanation that integrates data and knowledge from different disciplines. Nevertheless, design research has made significant progress in this area and provides a sound foundation for future research.
Heidegger
Martin Heidegger’s 1954 essay, “The Question Concerning Technology,” discusses the essence of technology. It was published in Vorträge und Aufsätze. It is a classic text that is relevant today, as technology continues to grow and change at a rapid rate. It is a great read for anyone interested in the nature of technology and its implications.
This essay argues that we must be skeptical of our technologically advanced world. While Heidegger acknowledges the positive aspects of technology, he also points out that man is becoming increasingly dependent upon it. He argues that the only way to truly understand technology is to see it as a mode of being, not as the object of it.
Arendt
Arendt’s recent appearance at a technology conference is significant because it draws attention to her work on technology. While Arendt is often discussed in relation to her critiques of totalitarianism, her thinking on technology has rarely been explored. She argues that the future of our technological systems is largely governed by the conditions they create.
One of the key themes in Arendt’s work is the changing hierarchy of categories in modern life. She argued that the proliferation of machines, and the resulting disruption in society, could end in disaster. The proliferation of machines threatens the existence of entire nations and all humankind. In her later work, she focused on issues such as politics and peace.
Bigelow
Bigelow, Technology is a Nevada-based company with a specialized focus in space exploration. The company was founded more than 20 years ago and specializes in aeronautics and space station equipment. The company has also been developing space module technologies for two decades. Most recently, it gained attention for its role in NASA’s expandable habitat technology demonstration. The company’s BEAM or Bigelow Expandable Activity Module was designed to make life on the International Space Station easier and more comfortable for astronauts. The company also recently transferred ownership of its inflatable space module to the NASA Johnson Space Center. Eventually, this space module could be deployed on the International Space Station as early as 2024.
While NASA is considering attaching a Bigelow Aerospace module to the International Space Station, Russia plans to add more modules to the space station next year. Meanwhile, Bigelow and UK’s Astronomy Technology Centre (ATC) have signed an understanding in order to work together to build a space telescope. The space telescope concept includes operating beyond the Moon. Bigelow hopes to operate its module at a Lagrange point, which are gravitational “sweet spots” where spacecraft can stay in orbit without wasting fuel.
Verbeek
In his book, Verbeek develops a new theory of technology and its role in society. Technology is a tool that allows people to achieve various goals, including creating and sharing knowledge. It has become an indispensable part of our lives, and the way we interact with it is changing. This book is a valuable resource for philosophy of technology students, philosophers, and engineers.
Peter-Paul Verbeek is a Dutch philosopher of technology who is currently a professor in the philosophy department at the University of Twente and co-director of the University of Twente’s DesignLab. He also serves as a member of the Dutch council for the Humanities and chair of the Society for Philosophy and Technology. His research focuses on the relationship between technology and the human being, as well as on ethics, design, and practice.
