Entertaiment, derived from the old French word entretenir (“to hold together”) or “entertain” (“amuse”), is all about distraction and amusement. From the clown at a birthday party, to the Broadway show, to a stadium rock concert—or even your friends fighting over the last potato chip—entertainment is a form of performance that can be private or public and structured or spontaneous. It often carries with it a sense of familiarity and a je ne sais quoi.
